Skin Removal Pre-Procedure Discussion
Prior to the actual procedure, you'll want to talk to your subject and ask medically relevant questions, and make sure they know what they're getting into. It's ideal to do this a couple weeks in advance, so you can acquire any newly needed supplies.
Informed Consent
At some point I'll have a nice form for this. Until then, I'm only doing this with friends, and having this part as an informal conversation.
- This is a permanent scarification procedure. Discuss what it entails.
- This is somewhat experimental; discuss experience you do and don't have. Show pics.
- Can't guarantee outcomes, so much variance
- The procedure is gonna take a while (give time estimate)
- It's gonna suck
- Possibility of keloid scarring (esp. if darker skin, 15x more likely!) Show pics of bad ones.
- Possibility of bad itching, short/long term
- Infection - if so, will need to go to urgent care. Ensure this is in your budget.
- Significant pain while healing
- Reduced mobility
- Leakage, smell
- Lack of energy, weakness
- Timeline for healing
- Aftercare requirements
- Precare requirements
Questions for Subject
- Are you on any anticoagulants, or are you otherwise at increased risk of bleeding? (If so, consult Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics p.104)
- Do you have a latex allergy? (Skip if not using any latex materials)
- Are you allergic to strawberries, bananas, kiwis, or poinsettias? If yes - latex allergy likely.
- Are you allergic to chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) or povidone-iodine (PVP-I)?
- Are you allergic to shellfish? (If so, avoid use of iodine skin preps)
- Do you have any known adhesive allergies, or a history of reaction to adhesive? (More likely for EDS)
- Do you have a history of hypertrophic or keloid scarring?
- Dietary restrictions for snacks purposes?
- (If you have access) Do you want numbing cream applied for this procedure?
- How big of a design are we doing? (To ensure appropriately sized bandages)
- What do you want for the design? (To ensure you have appropriately sized curettes, biopsy punches, etc)
- Where are we doing the design?
- How much body hair do you have there? (If significant hair, need to figure out electric clippers)
- When are we doing this? (Ensure you, subject, and assistant are all free)
- What kind of communication do you want during the procedure? (i.e. tell you what's happening, shut up, frequent check-ins, distracting conversation)
- Do you want any videos to watch during this? Do you have feelings about music playing during this?
- What does this mean to you? Do you want to ritualize any aspects of the procedure, or otherwise make it special? Do you want to prepare some words, do you want to set up an altar, do you want me to say things?
